The Best Places to Visit in Denmark in July

July is one of the most popular times of the year to visit Denmark, with it being one of the two warmest months, and with Denmark's weather bringing more sunshine at this time of the year. It's a great time to visit to explore the Danish outdoors and landscapes, as well as see the popular sights.

We suggest starting off your trip in Copenhagen, and then heading up north to Aarhus, Skagen, and Thy National Park. There are lots of great walks around this area, as well as a rugged beach to explore.

1. Explore the Sights of Copenhagen and Go to Copenhagen Jazz Festival

Copenhagen is a beautiful city with lots of sights to see. Many visitors' first stop is the Little Mermaid, a sculpture inspired by the famous Danish Hans Christian Andersen's famous fairytale. The Little Mermaid was a gift from Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg, and a family picture with her is an absolute must!

Following on from the Little Mermaid, we recommend walking around Nyhavn, with its restaurants, bars and shops, and if you are interested in Carlsberg's history, visiting the Home of Carlsberg to learn about its history and importance in Copenhagen's history. There's something for everyone inside, with a horse stables, sculpture garden, and a beautiful courtyard with, of course, a bar.

In July, Copenhagen is also home to the annual Copenhagen Jazz Festival. With loads of concerts throughout the city in the week between July 5 and 14, 2024, there are concerts both indoors and at Copenhagen's outdoor venues, from local and international acts. Contact us if you need help booking tickets and planning your trip around this. Dates for Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2025 are still to be confirmed.

2. Explore Aarhus' Viking History and the Aarhus Cathedral

Aarhus is located on Denmark's Jutland peninsula, and has a long history as an important Danish Viking stronghold dating back to the late 700s. At that time, Aarhus was known as Aros, and you can still see remnants of this important past in Aarhus today.

We suggest walking around Aarhus on foot to get a feel for the city. You can learn more about this in our piece about the weather in Denmark in June. After you explore on foot, check out the Viking Museum to learn more about this important time in Aarhus' past.

Aarhus is also home to a beautiful cathedral, the Aarhus Cathedral. We suggest taking the time to explore it, and it is actually both the longest and tallest church in Denmark, at an amazing 96 meters (or 315 feet) tall and 93 meters (or 305 feet) long. Given that construction dates back to the 12th century, that is pretty impressive. The frescoes you will see inside were renovated in the 14th as well as the 16th centuries.

3. Enjoy a Rugged Beach Walk in Skagen

Denmark's northernmost town, Skagen, is located at the very top of Denmark. It is both the country's main fishing post, as well as a tourist hub attracting people from all over the world to see its landscapes and soak up the fishing culture.

We recommend stopping off on the beach at Grenen, and going for a walk there. This is where the North Sea meets the Baltic Sea, which is an impressive sight to see. The landscapes there are rugged and very different from what you'll find in most of the rest of the world. If you'd like to follow a set trail, there is the Grenensporet Drachmanns Grav, which starts from Skagen and heads towards Grenen, passing deserted Second World War bunkers.

Skagen is also home to the Skagen Museum, where you would see beautiful paintings done by local artists from the 19th and 20th centuries, all of whom were inspired by the landscapes you would have just been able to enjoy.

4. Walk Thy National Park's Untouched Dunes

Thy National Park is one of Denmark's natural gems, and is the perfect place to enjoy the beautiful forests, untouched dunes, and explore traditional coastal villages through beautiful walks and drives.

The park is peaceful, and villages in the area live in close synergy with nature. If you are looking for some time away from crowds and people, this is one of the best places to come in Denmark in the summer. There are multiple trails to walk from a range of easy, intermediate, and more advanced trails. Contact us to us to help us book your time in Thy National Park, as some trails are better with a local guide.

We also suggest stopping off in Stenbjerg, inside the park, where you can head out on a fishing trip with local fishermen. If you'd like to camp, there are several locations at which you can do that, including Hvidbjerg Plantation, which also has shelters available in case you haven't brought tents with you.

Crowds and Costs for Traveling in July

July is a peak tourist season in Denmark, with lots of tourists coming from all over Europe and North America during their school holidays to enjoy the warmer weather in Denmark. As a result, accommodation prices and transportation might be more expensive, so we recommend booking further in advance if you want to visit in July.

This also means that some of the popular sights are busier, for example the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen, as well as Nyhavn. Setting off earlier in the day can help mitigate some of the crowd encounters.

What to Wear in July

July's weather is generally cool to mild, so we recommend bringing a jumper or a light coat on top of longer trousers and a t-shirt. However, the temperatures can also fluctuate, particularly into the warmer side of the averages, so it's worth bringing a summer outfit in case you happen across a warmer day, as well as bringing an extra layer in case you hit a cooler day.

For those looking to hike in Skagen or to head into Thy National Park, we suggest warmer clothing as the parks and beaches can be windy. We also suggest bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and supportive footwear to protect you from the sun and keep your feet happy on your walks!
