The Best Places to Visit in Denmark in October

October is autumn in Denmark, with generally cold to cool weather. The beginning of the month is warmer than the end of the month, on average, so we recommend finding a mix of outdoor and indoor activities to do.

For tourists coming to Denmark in October, there are so many great places to visit. We suggest checking out Copenhagen, Aalborg, Rubjerg, and Hillerød.

Planning a trip can be stressful, especially if you have not visited Denmark before. To make the most of your time, reach out to us at Global Highlights and our Denmark experts can help you put together the trip of your dreams! Contact us and we'll start planning your trip to Denmark.

1. Eat and Drink in Copenhagen's Hip Vesterbro Neighborhood

Copenhagen is a buzzing city full of activities for all ages, and the food and beverage scene is known around the world.

Vesterbro is one of the most fun neighborhoods in Denmark's capital city. Having once been a bit run down, it now is home to lots of charming boutiques and indie fashion stores tucked away between adult shops and dive bars, as well as warehouses converted into hip restaurants.

We suggest spending the afternoon walking around for some shopping, visiting the art galleries, and having a delicious dinner at one of the cool restaurants.

At walking distance from Vesterbro you will also find Nyhavn, or the iconic New Harbor. On a sunny day we suggest taking a boat tour, or if you happen on a rainy day, we suggest getting a warm drink inside one of the cafés. Or if you still have the energy, venture further north towards the famous Little Mermaid statue.

If you'd like to do a walking tour or arrange a private tour with transport, a Global Highlights expert can help you visit all of these sights while giving you the background information and being able to answer any questions about Copenhagen that you might have. Contact us for more information.

2. Visit Aalborg and Nearby Viking Burial Ground Lindholm Høje

Aalborg, the fourth-biggest city in Denmark, has a long history, having been founded in 700 AD. As a result of both of these facts, it is an interesting mix of old and new, attracting visitors looking for cute local cafés as well as historical houses.

On top of this, approximately 3 kilometers (2 miles) away, you'll find an important Viking burial ground — Lindholm Høje. This site has been a place for burials in both the Germanic Iron Age and Viking times, and dates back around 1,500 years.

We suggest visiting the Lindholm Høje Museum to learn more about the importance of the site, which also has interactive exhibits.

3. Feel the Wind in Your Hair at Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse

Slightly further north, beyond Aalborg, is Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse, located along the North Sea coast of Denmark in the Jutland municipality. The lighthouse is located on top of Lønstrup Cliff, at around 60 meters (200 feet) above sea level. While there are many picturesque lighthouses located on the Danish coast, this one is different because shifting sands and coastal erosion are encroaching on the lighthouse.

The lighthouse's current location is not its original location, as it was predicted to have fallen into the sea in 2023. That is why, in 2019, it was moved slightly further in-land. The move is believed to secure its safety until at least 2060.

Lønstrup Cliff has some beautiful scenic viewpoints where you can see rugged Danish coastal landscapes. For many more beautiful typical Danish landscapes, we suggest a road trip through to the northern-most point, Skagen, which you can read more about in our piece about visiting Denmark in May.

4. Explore the Majestic Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød

While Denmark is full of gorgeous castles, Frederiksborg Castle is different, as it is the largest Renaissance residence in all of Scandinavia, and it has a museum inside.

Frederiksborg Castle was built in the 17th century, as the royal residence for King Christian IV of Denmark-Norway, and is located just 30 minutes away from the capital of Copenhagen, making for a great day trip away from the city.

The inside of the castle houses the Danish Museum of Natural History, where you can see Denmark's largest portrait painting collection, as well as taxidermied animals, fossils, minerals, meteorites and more from all over the world. While impressive for all ages, we particularly suggest this museum for kids.

For more information about visiting Hillerød, check out our piece about visiting Denmark in April. If you love visiting palaces and royal buildings, Denmark should be high on your list of countries to visit. You can find more information in our article about visiting Denmark in March.

Low Season: Less Expensive and Fewer Crowds

October is off-peak for tourists, and this makes it a great time of the year to visit. You can expect fewer crowds at the popular tourist destinations, and prices for transportation and accommodation are generally lower when compared to the busier summer months of July and August.

What to Wear in October

With October being quite cool in Denmark, and colder in the mornings and evenings, we suggest bringing lots of layers. If you are planning on spending lots of time outdoors, we suggest bringing a winter coat, too. Wool jumpers or fleece pullovers are great to wear underneath.

We also recommend bringing gloves, a hat, and a scarf if you tend to get cold, particularly if you are thinking of visiting the north of Denmark or looking to explore its natural scenery. An umbrella or a raincoat is also not a bad idea, and supportive footwear ensures that you can comfortably explore Denmark on foot. Coming prepared means you won't get caught out by the weather.
