The Best Places to Visit in Denmark in September

September comes just after the peak of summer, and while the milder temperatures linger into the month, there are fewer visitors in September. This makes it a great time of the year to visit, particularly if you prefer to travel off-peak.

In September we suggest visiting Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, and Thy National Park, to get some outdoor time in, as well as lots of architecture, museums, and other beautiful sights throughout Denmark.

If you are looking for professional guidance when planning your trip, Global Highlights has Denmark experts on hand who can arrange everything from transportation to sightseeing to tour guides and accommodation. Contact us for a customized trip to Denmark.

1. Admire Copenhagen's Architectural Marvels Off the Beaten Paths

Copenhagen is full of incredible sights for those who like learning about architecture, and you could spend the day visiting interesting old buildings and beautiful modern architectural pieces.

We suggest starting off in Nordhavn, or North Harbor, an upcoming neighborhood where you will find the Silo, a former grain silo that has been remodeled into a residential building. It looks amazing from the outside with raw steel-covered surfaces that have been likened to Gotham City architecture. There you can also visit Portland Towers, some of the tallest buildings in the neighborhood with an interesting shape, also former silos.

The Royal Danish Library is also worth a visit, as a historical and modern building combined, we suggest getting a coffee at the café. If you like opera, or even if you'd just like to look at it from the outside, the Copenhagen Opera House is a beautiful structure too, as is the Royal Danish Playhouse.

On another day, visit the must-sees, including the Little Mermaid statue, the beautiful palaces of Copenhagen, the Home of Carlsberg, and the famous Nyhavn or New Harbor for dinner and drinks. There is enough to see in Copenhagen to keep you busy for days.

2. Explore Aarhus and Visit Legoland in Nearby Billund

Aarhus, one of the original Viking settlements in Denmark, is a beautiful historic city and the second biggest city in the country. There are lots of great attractions there, including the Den Gable By, the Old Town Museum. This interactive museum will give insights into Danish market towns throughout the years, particularly in the 1800s, early 1900s, late 1900s, and in 2014.

The ARoS Aarhus Art Museum also comes highly recommended, as one of the most visited art museums in Scandinavia.

If you are traveling with your family (or if you are a Lego fan!), nearby Billund is worth checking out as it is the home of Lego, and the entire town developed alongside Lego since its founding in the 1930s. It is also where you will find Legoland, a theme park for all ages with speedy rides, Lego-related activities, and of course, an amazing gift shop.

3. Visit the Home of Hans Christian Andersen in Odense

Odense, Denmark's third-biggest city, is the home of Hans Christian Andersen, the world-famous author behind stories such as The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, and many others. Apart from that, it's a huge student city with lots of bike paths, and so worth going for a cycle around.

Andersen authored a total of 160 fairy tales, and if you've gone to see the Little Mermaid Statue in Copenhagen, Odense is worth a visit for the museum dedicated to him and his work.

Odense is only around 165 km (100 miles) from Copenhagen, and you could spend the night or turn it into a day trip. For more information about visiting Odense, please check out our article about visiting Denmark in January.

4. Hike around Thy National Park and Visit Lodbjerg Lighthouse

Thy National Park is in the northwest of Denmark, and is a beautiful national park combining woodlands, dunes, lighthouses, beaches, hills, and wilderness. If you like hiking, and you're interested in seeing more of Denmark's natural landscapes, we highly suggest spending a few days there.

We recommend visiting Lodbjerg Lighthouse, dating back to 1883. The lighthouse was built using granite blocks imported from Sweden, and it is a little crooked. This is because there was an attempt to dig a tunnel underneath it leading to a bunker back in World War II.

The lighthouse operated on petroleum until 1932, and today is fully automated. Even though ships generally use GPS these days, it still turns on every evening. We suggest taking walks through the sea dunes nearby to experience the rugged Danish coastlines. For other walks and activities that are worth looking into at Thy National Park, check out our articles about visiting Denmark in July and August.

If you have more time and love exploring nature, it is also worth seeing whether you can travel all the way up to Skagen, on Denmark's northern peak, which is home to beautiful beaches and walks.

End of High Season: Less Expensive and Fewer Crowds

September falls right at the end of the peak season of July and August. If you are visiting in early September, you might find that it is still a little busier and more expensive, but in general, visiting in September you should find things are less expensive and slightly less crowded. We do recommend still booking ahead.

What to Wear in September

Given that September's weather ranges between cool and mild, we suggest bringing a range of layers. If you are traveling in early September, you might still come across the odd warm day, so bringing one summer outfit is not a bad idea. However, in general, we suggest bringing a jacket as well as a jumper so that you don't get cold. This is especially important if you're planning on spending lots of time outdoors walking or visiting Denmark's coast.
